TO DESIGN OR DECORATE?

December 21, 2022

How can an interior designer help you? Not everyone has the eye to discern what looks good. There’s really a lot that goes into good design. Color, scale, proportion, mix and personal style are just a few factors.

Scale is a tricky one. Have you ever walked into a room and felt something was ‘off’? It was probably the scale of the contents. We all love a big, comfy, squishy sofa, but that doesn’t mean big and squishy is the right fit for every room. Trying to stuff furniture whose scale is disproportionate to the space will automatically make you feel uncomfortable. The secret to proper scale is mixing it up! Different shapes, heights and sizes give visual interest and create design that is pleasing and successful. An interior designer is there to guide you to the correct ratio of room to furniture size.

Scale and proportion also applies to accessories. We all have a beloved collection and we want to proudly display it. But… there are rules! The design rule of three is a great place to start. When arranging decor items, an odd number is always more pleasing to the eye. 3, 5 and even 7 items are what you should emphasize. And don’f forget within those numbers to combine varying textures, height and color. Keep those collections together. Don’t sprinkle them throughout the room or your entire home. Using a professional to help you arrange your decor, will give you the polished look you’re searching for.

Hanging art is definitely an art in itself. It takes a practiced eye and experience to get that perfect balance. Don’t be afraid to ask a friend or designer for help. Make paper templates of your artwork and use painters tape to visually guide you on the exact placement. Whether it’s one large piece or an entire gallery wall, laying it out thoughtfully and with purpose will save you from having to patch a wall full of nail holes.

Do you love to stroll through showrooms? Everything is so polished and pleasing. These purposefully curated looks are nice in the store, but don’t bring the showroom home. Your personal items are what makes a house a home. Matchy-matchy lacks character. You do not lack character. You’re fun and interesting, quirky and loving. An interior designer can carefully integrate your character into your home’s style. These touches of you bring your home to life. The pages of your favorite design magazine are fun to look at, but not practical to live in. Homes can get messy and that’s okay. Your home is where memories are made.

Interior designers aren’t swatch monsters. Interior designers are there to help you bring your dream home to life. Let us help you find your style and live your best life in surroundings that bring you joy.

Stylishly yours,
