You can design your home to have it never go out of style and stand the test of time. There’s a reason we love the elements from generations past, there’s a reason items come back in style, there’s a reason some decor will live with you forever… we love them!

We love the feeling of grandma’s apron sink and the grandness of a time worn marble backsplash and woodwork that goes with every style of architecture. All of these elements and more are things we’re going to highlight in today’s conversation.

Timeless is a word that we don’t hear much anymore. People want the trendiest, most current, stylish things of today. But often, these ideas have an expiration date. Trends are fun, but they’re just that… trends. Making your home last through the ages is what gives it that coziness and comfort.

Here are some ways to use decor that you won’t regret years from now:

✦   Neutral Paint Colors

I know you’re thinking, how boring! But if you’re prone to buying new bedding for your master bedroom every time the seasons change, don’t paint your bedroom in a very specific color. Neutral paint colors allow you to change your decor as your styles change. Like the farmhouse apron sink, neutral paint gives you the opportunity to decorate around it and still feel at home.

When building a home from the ground up, people often skimp on materials. Flooring for example. Flooring is one of the last items to install in a home and the budget is very well stretched at that point. Don’t cheap out on the floors. Installing quality materials that will last will make living in your home a joy for years. I would like to highlight laminate floors. I know you’re thinking, “you just said install quality materials. Laminate is cheap.” Have you seen the new laminate floors? They’re beautiful and durable and will stand up to the daily grind of family, pets and life!

Using natural materials and time tested finishes in your design will always feel timeless. Trim work in your home is always a good idea. And matching that trim work to the architectural style of your home will make that design element last for years. Chrome fixtures are a solid choice. There are so many colors of fixtures to choose from these days. But if you look back over time, again and again at design styles, chrome can be found in every era.

✦   Mix the Old with the New

Keeping a vintage piece of furniture or two is not a faux pas. Mixing the old with the new is what keeps it interesting. Vintage furniture and decor combined with the contemporary styles we love today adds interest, depth and a sense of heritage.
