GRANDMA HAD GREAT STYLE!

October 18, 2021

As we embark on the fall and winter months, do you begin to think about your home’s interior?

We spend more time indoors cozied up on the sofa watching movies, sipping cocoa with a book by the fire, cooking warm comfort food and staring blissfully at the holiday decor. I know I also sit and ponder the changes I would like to make in my home. How many years has it been since you painted the walls? Do you really ‘love’ the furniture pieces you use daily? Is there any sense of fun or whimsy to your decor?

The last few years have made us all rethink our surroundings. Don’t you think you should love your home and let it love you back? I remember leisurely Sunday afternoons spent at grandma’s house. We would eat a sumptuous lunch and then the family would lounge and talk. Some would watch football, some would read the paper, the kids would color using the coffee table to spread out and naturally some would nap amid the ambient family noise.

Trends come and go, and the sense of comfort and tradition is one that’s taking shape in home design. Grandmillenial Style is emerging right in line when we’re all looking for comfort. Grandmillenial is quite the turn from the sleek, mono-chromatic, mid-century modern styles. This new style embraces tradition. It is pure nostalgia, harkening back to grandma’s house, lots of plants, matching china and even chintz!

Have you had your china and crystal packed away because all it did was gather dust? Break those pieces out of their cardboard jail and put them to use! The memories they contain will not only help bolster your heart, they will bring new life to your interiors.

And while you’re setting the table… look around! Do you love your dining set? If you don’t, consider a change. Bold, statement furniture can bring that sense of fun to your home. Mix your heirloom chairs with a minimalist table. Hang a showstopping chandelier. Replace your standard sofa with an eye-popping colorful piece that your whole family will want to pile on. Have some fun with your decor. Be bold and love the quirky combinations you can make.

Grandmillenial style allows you to combine the generational pieces with the modern. It’s all about curating your rooms with items you’ve collected or been gifted over the years. Remember…. Your grandparents didn’t furnish their homes with suites of furniture from chain stores. They were handed down cherished pieces that were well crafted and well loved.

So as we enter a time of year where we gather and share, make your home joyful. Bring joy to others as you make new memories in the spaces you inhabit every day!

Stylishly yours,

The Chelsee Sowder Design Team
