Don’t be Trendy

December 1, 2023

What is a trend? Defined it is a general direction in which something is developing or changing.
Design and architecture get saddled with being “trendy”. But what is coming for design trends is
to NOT be trendy. The common thread and theme for home style is sophistication, timeless
beauty, and concepts that will last the test of time. When planning to renovate or build from
scratch, our team can help you create a space that is suited for you, your family and your
lifestyle; while at the same time being current with what is fashionable and curating the space to
be beautiful years from now.
“Today, ‘everything is up for redesign,’ says Los Angeles-based designer and Architectural
Digest Pro Directory member Brigette Romanek. “Rooms serve multiple purposes, walls are
back, and feeling comfortable is important,” she notes, adding that many of those trends are the
direct result of the rise in remote work. Creating dedicated spaces for Zoom calls- and for
disconnecting after logging off them- required a substantial rejiggering of existing layouts. “I’ve
worked on dining rooms becoming offices, offices becoming wellness rooms, bathtubs put on
balconies,” continues Romanek. Particularly in the warmer climes of California, Texas, or
Florida, where many people relocated over the past three years, outdoor rooms are in high
demand, she notes.’” (quote from Architectural Digest 2024 interior design forecast).

Given this shift in how we live in our homes, our homes are more holistic. Meaning our homes
are now more personalized to how we use them and what we enjoy while at home. Many
spaces have morphed into hybrid, multi-functional rooms where more than one activity can take
place. We do so many different things now at home and we need to look at what those things
are to create spaces that work. Do you cook, craft, work from home, use a home gym, make
craft cocktails, collect wine or spirits? All of these activities require specialized spaces, but that
doesn’t mean you have to add on a suite of rooms to accommodate the things you enjoy.
Repurpose your spaces and make them work for how you live today. Multi-purpose is key.
Spaces can still be an open floor plan, but using highly tailored functional areas to enjoy your
life. If you don’t use your breakfast nook, replace the table and chairs with soft, comfy chairs or
a sofa for an area to enjoy coffee or read a book. Make your work from home desk area more
useful and attractive. Curate a backdrop for those long Zoom meetings. Adding sculptural art
behind you gives a great background for your screen set up. Carve out a corner in your garage
or den for exercise equipment. The functionality of your home needs to transform and adjust just
as we all have had to over the last few years.
You deserve a home in which you enjoy living within. A space that comforts and protects you
while allowing you to live life to the fullest. We’re here to help! How can your home transform
into a space that makes your soul smile?
Stylishly yours,
The Chelsee Sowder Design Team
